About Our Buoys
The SmartBay Buoy Program includes a 3 m. meteorological/oceanographic buoy at the mouth of Placentia Bay, a second 3 m. meteorological/
oceanographic buoy at the Pilot Boarding Station at the south end of Red Island and a smaller 1.7 m. WatchKeeper meteorological/oceanographic buoy at the head of Placentia Bay off Come By Chance Point.

Real-time and archived data from the SmartBay buoys is freely available to the public and is used by SmartBay.ca to develop the custom weather and sea-state forecasts for Placentia Bay which are available on this site.

The first SmartBay buoy was deployed on August 18, 2006 and since then we have undergone numerous modifications and upgrades. In June 2010 the buoys at Red Island and Come By Chance Point were replaced with new buoys providing enhanced data collection and communications. This upgrade was made possible through a contribution from the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, Govt. of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Detailed descriptions of each buoy are available on the individual buoy pages.
