In 2006, SmartBay introduced the local fishing industry in Placentia Bay to Automatic Identification System (AIS) technology, to help improve situational awareness between large and small vessel traffic. In partnership with Vale, SmartBay is continuing this program this Fall, for fishing vessels operating in the vicinity of the Long Harbour Processing Plant. The AIS installation program is currently underway and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011. SmartBay is also finalizing funding to continue with this initiative and make the AIS technology available to other fishers in Placentia Bay in 2012. Stay tuned for further updates!
